In Vienna, Los Mexikas is probably the most authentic Mexican restaurant. There is a branch in Lange Gasse in Vienna’s 8th district, Josefstadt, as well as another in Leopoldstadt (in the 2nd district), which is located just around the corner from the popular Karmeliter Market.

Both restaurants are simply furnished – definitely not chic and trendy, which simply makes them more original and typically Mexican. The same is true for the menu in Los Mexikas. Simple, original food from the large central American country without any unnecessary décor or hipster factor. The interior and the food here are truly Mexican. If you would like to experience genuine Mexican food, this is the right place for you.

New: Tacos – Made in Vienna

Do you remember the Pie Factory in Spitalgasse in Vienna’s 9th district, Alsergrund? A few months ago, it closed down and the premises are now rented by a small but fine taco establishment. You will find Tacos Dios opposite the university campus of the University of Vienna (the former General Hospital of Vienna, referred to as the Altes AKH by locals).

Tacos Dios is not really suitable for a larger dinner as there is simply not enough space. However, it is the perfect place to go for a quick snack. As the name reveals, the focus is on tacos. The small Mexican “fladen”, for the most part made from wheat or corn, are offered with a wide variety of fillings. There is something for everyone on the menu – for both vegetarians and meat eaters
. And if the fillings are not enough for you, you can have your taco topped with an extra portion of wonderful melted cheddar cheese The corn is also available with a topping of melted cheddar cheese. Corn on the cob is very popular everywhere in both Latin and South America.

Restaurant Pancho is an institution of Mexican food in Vienna. It is located in Leopoldstadt (2nd district of Vienna) directly opposite the Taborstraße underground stations and it feels as if it has been here forever. Tortillas, nachos, bean purée, rice, pico de gallo and the homemade salsa dominate the extensive menu. A special mention has to be made of the chili poppers pancho, a starter of baked jalapeño chillies filled with sheep’s cheese.

The very large selection of cocktails also guarantee a good start to a wonderful evening. In Pancho there are 13 different types of tequila drinks alone– Viva la Mexico! From margaritas in various fruity flavours (banana, mango, lemon, strawberry to name but a few) to a classic which is not yet so well known in Vienna: frozen margarita. This is a type of tequila sorbet, which is great as a drink before or even instead of a dessert after a meal.

Santos – Modern Bar Culture and Mexican Zeitgeist

Wieden (4th district) has increasingly become a culinary paradise for food lovers and foodies from all over the world in the last few years. From the diverse Asian restaurants close to the famous Naschmarkt, to the hipster bars and restaurants in the area around Operngasse. You can find wonderful food to enjoy here. A hotspot in this quarter is definitely the Mexican restaurant, Santos.

On some days – and here, above all in the evenings – it is pretty difficult to get a table and for this reason, we recommend you reserve in advance. Santos itself is a relatively large restaurant and it also has a spacious bar. A perfect opportunity to combine a cocktail with some bar food. From 4pm until 8pm every day, there is a Cocktail Happy Hour. The scope of the drinks menu is impressive, even when compared to classic cocktail bars.

The same is true for the food menu. Some classic Mexican dishes as well as newly interpreted creations from the country situated between the two Americas are available at Santos. As a starter, for example, you can choose between tortilla chips with guacamole and salsa or deep-fried bananas with coriander and garlic mayonnaise. Those who prefer traditional dishes as well as lovers of modern Mexican food are certain to find something to satisfy their taste buds. And please also have a look at the “Mexican Streetfood” dishes.

Our Tip: What can you have to eat as a dessert in a Mexican restaurant? Of course, churros with chocolate and mango sauce!
