Some trends simply need a little more time to catch on in Vienna than in other metropolises. This is definitely true for high-class cocktail bars but now the city is finally richer because of their presence. Above all in the city centre, there is a lot going on. In the last few years a flourishing American bars’ scene has developed in Vienna.

The Roberto American Bar in the city’s first district, at Bauernmarkt, has become an institution in Vienna. The bar is very small and at the weekend, if you are lucky enough to actually get into the bar – the queues can be pretty long on some days – it can be somewhat crowded. One highlight in Roberto is, without a doubt, the interior design which can be described as truly special: black velvet as well as huge pearl chandeliers adorn the entire room. A further highlight – how could it be any different in one of the best bars in the city – is the cocktail menu. A secret tip in the style of Prohibition
Tür 7, in Vienna’s eighth district, Josefstadt, remains a secret tip. As in the times of prohibition in America, this cocktail bar is more than hidden – for example, there is no sign on the door and otherwise no indication that this bar exists in Buchfeldgasse. But if you do manage to find the entrance, you have to ring the bell first and wait until a friendly employee or even the boss personally grants you access to the establishment. A warm and cosy atmosphere awaits you inside the bar – almost as if you are in someone’s living room. The bar is small and exclusive and there is no cocktail list. It goes without saying that all the well-known cocktails are available but it is much more exciting to let the barman know what tastes you prefer and to trust him to mix a cocktail just for you.

The Botanical Garden is relatively new in the Viennese bar scene. A cocktail bar in Vienna’s ninth district, Alsergrund, just around the corner from the Votivkirche and the University of Vienna. The young team shares premises with the well-known Cafe Stein and you will find the entrance in a side street of Währingerstraße. The guests in the Botanical Garden are young, urban, easy going – just like the owners who also work behind the bar. A wide range of cocktails awaits you here. The bartenders, however, will also mix cocktails according to your personal wishes or, better still, will recommend a cocktail. Guests are usually pleasantly surprised by the creations.

The classic in the city centre
Visting Vienna without having had a drink in the world famous Loos Bar is simply a no-go! Hidden in a side street of Kärntnerstraße and only a short walk from St. Stephan’s, the Loos Bar is the best known American bar in Vienna. The entrance and the interior were designed by the famous architect and moderniser of Vienna, Adolf Loos.
The bar itself is only a few square metres large but the clever mirroring on the walls almost gives the impression of sitting in a great hall. Also good to know: The bar is full nearly every day and it is particularly well-frequented in the evening and at night. It is well worth waiting on a seat or barstool. The Loos Bar is as popular with locals as it is with visitors to the city. Especially in the small hours, the atmosphere becomes increasingly relaxed and conversation flows freely among the guests.
