New culinary hotspot: Alser Straße

In Alser Straße, new and modern cuisine meets tried-and-tested classics

Alser Straße represents the border between Vienna’s 9th district, Alsergrund, and its 8th district, Josefstadt. It is increasingly becoming a hot spot for cool and hip eating establishments. Both new and long-established eateries add to the flair of this small and lively shopping street. The proximity to the University of Vienna and the university campus in the grounds of the Old General Hospital (known to locals as Altes AKH) attracts young people and especially a young gastronomy scene.

Top selection: bowls twice in one street

In recent years, one of the food trends in Vienna has been so-called bowls. These are dishes where various ingredients, such as vegetables, proteins, grains and sauces are served in a bowl to provide a healthy and balanced meal. Alser Straße is home to no less than two eateries that specialise in this street food

The smaller and longer-established of the two is Wiki Wiki Poke. Inside, there are but a few seats. Outdoors, a cool city outdoor garden decorated in Hawaiian surf style. There is a very good selection of bowls, also for vegans. For example, bowls with salmon and chicken substitutes are offered here. The vegan salmon, in particular, is definitely worth tasting! Recently, baos in the form of filled hot dogs have also been added to the extensive bowls menu.

Still relatively new on Alser Straße – in this case, on the corner of Spitalgasse, opposite the university campus – is Honu Tiki Bowls. A gastro shop-in-shop concept. To the right of the entrance is the Bowl Bar, offering many different types of bowls. To the left of the entrance is a smoothie bar and a coffee counter. Have a refreshing vegetable or fruit smoothie as an accompaniment to your healthy bowl – what more could you want? Perfect when you don’t have much time. The restaurant itself is cosy – sit and relax at the large windows and watch the world go by.

The finest espresso and likely the best cheesecake in the neighbourhood

Coffee lovers also get their money’s worth on Alser Straße. To be more precise, in a side street: Pelikangasse on Alsergrund. A rather inconspicuous venue from the outside, it probably offers the best coffee in all its varieties in the neighbourhood. Small snacks and cakes are also served here. The delicious homemade cheesecake deserves a special mention. Cake and coffee – more Vienna feeling is hard to find. A hip and spartan interior which is still cosy due to its furnishings and outside a small, fine and shady garden – that is The Pelican Coffee Company.

Coffee & Donuts – What else?

The Donut Corner Vienna in Josefstadt offers dozens of types of donuts. The classics as well as the more unusual with various sweet toppings delight the customers. The coffee is also quite impressive. Five stars on Google Maps with almost 500 reviews confirm the quality on offer. The restaurant is more take-away oriented, but there are some tables inside and you can also make yourself comfortable in front of the restaurant. And another positive: stamp cards are available for both donuts and coffee.

“Doner kebab makes you more beautiful” (it is said in Austria!) – this also applies in Alser Straße

Directly opposite the side entrance to the university campus is the Dönermeister. The name is misleading: there are not only meat and vegetarian doner kebabs, but also wraps, dürüms, falafel, etc. This fast food restaurant is particularly popular with students and is usually very well frequented. There is seating inside as well as outside, in front of the restaurant. If you are vegetarian, you can have your kebab filled with either falafel or meat substitute. Why not try it out?

mel&koffie – the most popular bakery on Alser Straße

This was the first such restaurant, and now there are already two more. We are talking about mel&koffie on Alser Straße. Here you can watch the bakers and witness live how pastries and cakes are made by hand. And it tastes like that too! The aromas from the restaurant alone make passers-by stop and look curiously inside. Bread, bread rolls, salted sticks, filled and topped pastries, doughnuts, various types of cinnamon buns and much much more are offered here. Coffee and breakfast are also served in this bright and friendly restaurant. A top gastro spot and local supplier for nearby residents in one. But note: the bakery and the restaurant are (unfortunately) closed on Sundays.

Hardly any new restaurant has been in the media as much as Fratelli Valentino. And rightly so! It is a veritable enrichment for Alser Straße and Vienna as a whole. The Italian brothers produce the finest cheese – mozzarella, ricotta, provola, to name but a few. The quality is exceptional, the atmosphere typically Italian. Loud, cosy, warm and full of life. There are cheese platters, sandwiches, wine and various classic after-work drinks. Aperitivo culture – as you usually only know it from Italy. Be sure to try one of the various Negronis! Good to know: For a few weeks now there has also been an outdoor eating area in Brünnlbadgasse.

Ramen as you’d find it in Tokyo? Look just beyond Alser Straße and discover it is possible

If you love Japanese culture and food, you will immediately feel at home at Takumi Ramen Kitchen Vienna. The restaurant could just as easily be in Tokyo or another major Japanese city. The décor and food make this possible. The various ramen and yakisoba variations are of authentic quality. Ramen is a traditional Japanese noodle soup consisting of a hearty broth, long noodles, meat or vegetables and various toppings such as egg, nori seaweed and spring onions. Takumi also offers a wide range of vegetarian ramen and yakisoba, with savoury tofu, for example.
