Grätzel report – Hoher Markt

Our CheckVIENNA apartment directly on the Hoher Markt in the heart of Vienna

Our CheckVIENNA apartment is situated directly on the Hoher Markt – one of the oldest and most historically significant squares in Vienna. The apartment offers everything that a (tourist’s) heart could wish for. Hoher Markt is located at the centre of the old town of Vienna’s first district, which makes the Hoher Markt CheckVIENNA apartment the perfect starting point for a classic sightseeing holiday or a business trip in Vienna.

The location of the CheckVIENNA apartment is perfect – directly on Hoher Markt with a particularly special view. The “Hohe” part of the name means “important” rather than “high” (a literal translation) and the full name stems from the Middle Ages. It lies above the ruins of a former Roman legionary camp and the remains of this camp can be viewed in the Roman Museum, 3, Hoher Markt.

In order to do justice to its historically significant neighbour, the CHECKVIENNA apartment is equipped with all kinds of comfort. The apartment has 60 m² and up to six people can be accommodated in its two rooms. Every bedroom has a separate entrance. Guests can spend time together in the comfortable living room as well as in the large dining room and modern kitchen. After a day of sightseeing, what better way to relax than in the shower or in a bubble bath?

The CheckVIENNA apartment on Hoher Markt is only a five-minute walk from St. Stephen’s Square – or better put –right in the centre of Vienna. As such, it is the perfect starting point for classic sightseeing tours, whether on foot or by public transport as the underground lines, U3, U4 and U1 are only a short walk from the apartment.

The famous Anker Clock, created in Jugendstil (Art Noveau) by Franz Matsch, is definitely worth a visit. On the hour and every hour, a historical Viennese character moves across the bridge to the accompaniment of music.

The Graben (literally, the trench) or the shopping mile Kärntnerstraße are perfect places to while away the hours, whether you simply want to stroll around or to do some shopping.

Our Tip: Vienna’s landmark, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, offers an amazing view of the capital. The Cathedral’s two towers are open to the public and you can walk to the top of one while the other has an elevator.

You have the choice – either cook something for yourself in the fully equipped kitchen of your CheckVIENNA apartment or you can go out for something to eat. If you decide on the latter, you will be spoilt for choice as there is such a large selection of restaurants near Hoher Markt. We recommend that you simply try everything out!

On Hoher Markt itself, you can also go out for something to eat, for example at one of the most popular Würstelstände (“sausage stands”) in the whole of Vienna – am Würstelstand Hoher Markt. Or why not pay a visit to Joma, which is a favourite with many due to its long opening hours. The Ra‘mien Go is a further highlight with its typical Japanese dishes, in particular Ramen to go.

Nearby, on the banks of the Danube Canal, you will also find another culinary establishment, Motto am Fluss, where dishes of international contemporary cuisine with an Austrian focus are served.

And where will you find people queuing up in Vienna? Naturally at the Café Zentral. This traditional coffee house is simply an institution in the Viennese coffee house culture. Here you can try out various types of coffee and there is a selection of dishes to choose from.
