The multi-faceted Danube Island – Vienna’s own island with many exciting events
Musical, sporting or cultural events – the Danube Island is not only the most popular recreational area of the Viennese but also the place to go for a mixed array of events. All around, you will have an amazing panoramic view of Vienna while at the same time having a great time. The Danube Island will not disappoint you! Here you will find some of the events which will be taking place in summer on the Danube Island, for example, the Danube Island Festival.
The Danube Island is a long, narrow, manmade island which is situated between the Danube river and the parallel excavated channel, the “New Danube”. The island is 21.1 km long but only 70–210 m wide.
The Danube Island Festival: the largest open-air festival in Europe
Soon the Danube Island in Vienna will once again turn into a 4.5km long outdoor concert venue. We are referring to the 35th Danube Island Festival. This year’s Festival will take place from 22nd to 24th June and – without having to pay an entrance fee – you can enjoy a varied programme. In addition to 2,000 artists from all kinds of musical styles, the headliners in 2018 ‑ Wanda, Fedde le Grand, Antilopen Gang and Portugal. The Man – will guarantee a great time for all. Further, this year there will also be a Flying Fox, the chance to try out rodeo riding and, for the first time, a slam karaoke. Younger visitors are also catered for with their own Children’s Island. And, you are sure to find something to whet your appetite from the many eating establishments on the Island.
Our tip: We recommend that you travel to the Danube Island by public transport – for example, from a CheckVIENNA apartment. For the first time, it will also be possible to travel directly to the Danube Island with the Westbahn.
Beach Volleyball Tournament: Vienna hosts the first Vienna Major
Vienna’s Danube Island also shows its sporting side this year. From 1st to 5th August, the first Vienna Major Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place. Here the best female and male beach volleyball teams worldwide will compete against each other. And, an extra bonus: entrance is free! Seating follows on a “first come, first served” basis. Although the Centre Court can hold up to 10,000 visitors, huge crowds are expected this year because hardly any other country has such a large beach volleyball fan community. An event with a festival feeling and numerous side events awaits visitors.
Our tip: Don’t forget to take sun cream and some form of headwear with you. Then you are well-prepared for a day at the (sunny) Centre Court.

Experience African culture close up
Once again the Danube Island will host this exciting event. Africa Days – from 10th to 27th August 2018 – is certain to attract a large number of visitors. In addition to colourful clothing and delicious African food, you will also discover both traditional and modern arts and crafts in the large bazaar. Drum and dance workshops will also be held. And of course, younger visitors are also catered for with their own programme – the camel rides being particularly popular.
There are also two music shows every day in the evening, which means that you could attend a total of 36 live concerts. Both locals and visitors to Vienna should not miss this exciting journey to a faraway continent.

A different kind of triathlon
A sporting event without any competitve pressure? You can experience this on 9th September on Vienna’s Danube Island. Wanderlust 108 brings together three special sports disciplines: a 5km run or walk, an outdoor yoga session and finally a guided meditation session.
After the triathlon, further events are on offer, for example, aerial yoga or Hula-Hoop. Each participant can put together their own individual programme for the day.
A DJ on the main stage, delicious food and a large market with yoga and lifestyle products perfectly round off the event.
